UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a ceasefire in Ukraine “as soon as possible” in Moscow on Tuesday.
“What interests us very much is to find ways to create the conditions for an effective dialogue, to create the ceasefire conditions as soon as possible,” Guterres said ahead of his meeting with Russian diplomat Sergei Lavrov.
He added that while the situation in Ukraine is “complicated with different interpretations of what is out there”, it is possible to have “a serious dialogue about how to act to minimize people’s suffering”.
After meeting with Lavrov, Guterres will be received by President Vladimir Putin.
This is the UN Secretary-General’s first visit to Moscow since the start of the Russian military offensive against Ukraine on February 24.
After Moscow, Guterres plans to visit Kiev, where his decision to go to Russia has faced intense criticism. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he “does not see justice or logic in this order”.
