With the Korea-U.S. summit scheduled for next week, the U.S. plans to promise ‘substantial steps’ to show its will to stop North Korea’s nuclear attack on South Korea.
An anonymous senior US government official told Reuters on the 21st (local time), “The US defense commitment to nuclear deterrence will be ironclad in South Korea.” We are collaborating,” he said.
The official added, “President Biden will take practical steps to make it clear that there is no doubt about the US defense promise to stand with South Korea amid North Korea’s provocation.” However, he did not elaborate on what the ‘practical measures’ he was referring to were.
He also emphasized that “North Korea is much closer to China in many aspects than in the past,” and that “there is a high possibility that the US and South Korean leaders will also mention the human rights situation in North Korea at the summit next week.”
In addition, he said, President Biden plans to welcome South Korea’s additional support for Ukraine.
Meanwhile, President Yoon will pay a state visit to the United States on the 24th, and will attend a state dinner after holding a Korea-US summit with President Biden on the 26th (local time).
In an interview with Reuters on the 19th, President Yoon said, “If there is a large-scale attack on civilians, a massacre that cannot be tolerated by the international community, or a serious violation of the law of war, humanitarian or financial support will not be provided. It can be difficult to stay and insist on this,” he said, leaving open the possibility of providing arms to Ukraine.
