“Every generation has a time when it has had to stand up for democracy. Stand up for its basic freedoms. I think this is ours. That’s why I’m running for re-election as President of the United States. Join us. let’s finish the job“Biden wrote in a Twitter message accompanied by a video.

The announcement, in a three-minute recording, coincided with the fourth anniversary from the date Biden launched his campaign for the White House in 2019 and vowed to heal “the soul of the nation” during Donald Trump’s checkered presidency, a goal that has remained elusive.

“I said here we go a battle for the soul of America, and we still are”, Biden said this Tuesday. “The question we face is whether we will have more freedom or less freedom in the years to come. more rights or less”.

“Freedom. Personal freedom is fundamental to who we are as Americans. There is nothing more important. Nothing more sacred,” Biden said in the video presentation, which portrayed Republicans as extremists seeking to cut off access to abortion, cutting Social Security, limiting voting rights and banning books I disagree with. “Across the country, MAGA extremists are preparing to take away those basic freedoms.”

The vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris, has assured that she will once again aspire to be part of the democratic candidacy together with Biden. “As Americans, we believe in freedom and believe our democracy will be as strong as our will to fight for it,” she tweeted.

Shortly after the announcement, the Republican Party claimed that the president is “disconnected” from reality. “Biden is so out of touch with reality that he thinks he deserves another four years in power when all he’s doing is creating one crisis after another,” said party boss Ronna McDaniel.

As Clarín anticipated, there is a strong possibility that the fierce electoral battle of the last presidential election will be repeated in November 2024, when Biden clashed with Donald Trump and defeated him, in elections whose results were rejected by the former president who denounced fraud never tried.

Trump, 76, is for now the favorite candidate of the Republicans and he stands a great chance of being blessed among many of that party to fight for the White House again.

If Biden is re-elected, He would take office at age 82 and end his term at 86, becoming the oldest president in US history. The debate on age and health will certainly be a major theme of the election campaign and all his movements and speeches will be subject to close scrutiny.

It would be even more contrasting if his Republican challenger were someone much younger than Trump, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, 45, with school-age children.

Biden’s decision had been delayed. He said he would announce it at the end of the year and he didn’t. Other times the same thing happened, but nothing materialized. There wasn’t much rush to formalize his candidacy: incumbent presidents tend to delay their announcements as much as possible to get a better electoral panorama and see how their rivals fare.

But, moreover, Biden sought support because he faces skepticism even from members of his own party. Only half of Democrats think he should run again in 2024, though most would support him if he became the nominee.

Why are you running for re-election? Simply because no other Democratic candidate has appeared to challenge him for the leadership, and since Trump is emerging as his possible rival, he is thought to be best prepared to defeat him. The Democrat also bet on the man in last year’s general election and performed much better than expected, despite the fact that the US had historic inflation at the time.
