Shocking video released by the Fairfax County Police Department shows how a police officer who was conducting a traffic check is miraculously saved after being hit at more than 200km/h by a BMW car led by a teenager.
The crash occurred Monday morning in suburban Fairfax County as an officer was conducting a routine traffic stop on the southbound Fairfax County route about 20 miles from Capitol Hill, authorities said, according to reports from The New York Post.
The dash-cam video (a conventional camera specially configured for use inside a car) shows a black BMW sedan driven by a teenager approaching within inches of the officer, who he had left his patrol stop a gray BMW for speeding.
The black 2018 BMW M3 driven by a 17-year-old Heading north on the driveway, he lost control, spun and into traffic, colliding first with the car that had been stopped by the officer and then with the police car.
Footage shows the officer falling to the ground but almost immediately getting back up and managing to escape out of the way of the vehicle, narrowly avoiding losing his life in the gruesome collision.
What was injured was a driver who was stopped and was inside his car, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.
The teenage driver responsible for the mayhem was going “over 120 mph (200 km/h),” Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis told WRC-TV.
Both the agent and the three passengers aboard the black BMW escaped unharmed.. According to the report released a few hours after the event, the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident and the people who were with him had their seat belts fastened.
The driver was charged with reckless driving and he and his two underage passengers sustained minor injuries.
In a Facebook post, officials expressed relief that everyone emerged relatively unscathed from the crash, saying it was a learning moment.
“Parents and guardians should consider using this video as an opportunity to have a conversation with their teenage drivers about how to your driving behavior can affect the lives of others”, wrote the police.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief of Police Bob Blakley said road safety among teenage drivers was on the decline. So far this year speeding tickets for teenagers have increased by 6% and warnings for not following signs have increased by 98%.
