An American startup has developed a gun that works only when you enter your biometric information.
According to Bloomberg and others on the 30th (local time), Colorado-based start-up ‘Biofire’ introduced a ‘smart gun’ that requires face and fingerprint information to be unlocked.
The smart gun has a small fingerprint sensor on the handle and a 3D facial recognition sensor on the back of the gun. If an authorized person picks it up, it will turn green and the safety device can be removed. When an unauthorized person holds a gun, the fire does not come on and the fire cannot be fired. A Biofire official said that the introduction of the smart gun will prevent infant gun accidents and accidental gun suicides among teenagers.
Biofire founder and CEO Kai Klopper, 26, said he started developing the smart gun as an on-campus project after learning that 12 civilians had been killed by a gunman at a nearby movie theater while in high school. . Kai added that he was inspired by seeing the ‘James Bond exclusive pistol’ in the movie ‘007 Skyfall’.
Clopper dropped out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to focus on the smart gun project. Today, the 26-year-old is leading a solid startup with 40 employees and $30 million in funding.
Gun organizations such as the American Rifle Association are protesting that smart guns are impractical to protect the holder in an emergency. Bloomberg reports that gun groups are opposing the development of smart guns because of fears that future government regulations may force them to replace all firearms with biometrics at high cost.
Biofire plans to start shipping smart gun orders in the fourth quarter of this year. The price is 1500 dollars (about 1.95 million won).
