Gary Prado Salmón, the Bolivian soldier who captured “Che” Guevara has died

The Bolivian general Gary Meadow Salmonwhich he captured Ernesto Che Guevara in 1967, he died on Saturday in the city of Santa Cruz at the age of 84. The news was confirmed by his son on social media.

“The Lord just called my father Gral Div SP Gary Augusto Prado Salmón to his Kingdom. He left with his wife and children. He leaves us a legacy of love, honesty and courage. He was an extraordinary person,” he wrote. son Gary Prado Araúz on his Facebook account.

Since mid-April, Prado Salmón has suffered from health complications and has been hospitalized, for which the son thanked in his message all the people who supported his family “in this moment of his agony”.

"Che" Guevara was captured in

“Che” Guevara was captured in October 1967 in Bolivia.

General Gary Prado Salmón commanded a patrol in southwestern Bolivia on 8 October 1967 it ended with the capture of “Che” Guevarawho was then wounded.

The next day, the Bolivian army complied with the order execute Guevara.

That same year, the Bolivian Congress named Prado Salmón a national hero for defending what the Bolivian military government of General René Barrientos then considered a “subversive foreign invasion”.

In 1981 an accidental blow struck him in the spine and left him in a wheelchair. In 1988 he retired from his military career.

In 2020 he was released after spending eleven years under house arrest for being accused of participating in a case to overthrow Evo Morales in Santa Cruz; a punishment that, in his view, was a kind of revenge for having captured “Che” decades ago.
