Japanese Foreign Ministry welcomes increased cooperation and exchanges at Korea-Japan summit

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at the Korea-Japan summit held in Seoul on the 7th that President Yoon Seok-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida welcomed the active increase in exchanges and cooperation between the governments and the private sector of the two countries.

In a press release issued after the summit, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that President Yun and Prime Minister Kishida, who had visited Korea, held a meeting for a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two leaders agreed to promote dialogue and cooperation between the governments of the two countries in various fields, including the finance minister meeting, the resumption of security talks between Korea and Japan, and the holding of economic security talks between Korea and Japan, according to the direction presented at the Korea-Japan summit held in Tokyo, Japan in March. He welcomed that progress has been made in the field of export management.

The two leaders positively assessed that economic exchanges between the two countries had been revived, as well as private exchanges and exchanges between lawmakers.

Prime Minister Kishida said in his remarks that he was delighted to be able to start shuttle diplomacy in earnest by visiting Seoul early after welcoming President Yun in Tokyo in March.

The Foreign Ministry reported that Prime Minister Kishida again expressed his appreciation for the cooperation provided by the Korean side in the process of Japanese withdrawal from Sudan.

The two leaders confirmed that the movement to improve Korea-Japan relations was on track and agreed to further develop Korea-Japan relations while strengthening trust through shuttle diplomacy, including the G7 normalization meeting in Hiroshima this month.

In this regard, when President Yoon visited Hiroshima, the site of the atomic bombing, on the occasion of attending the G7 summit, the heads of state of the two countries decided to visit the Peace Memorial Park and pay their respects together at the memorial monument for Korean atomic bomb victims.

The two leaders agreed that it is also important to strengthen deterrence and response capabilities through the US-Japan alliance, ROK-US alliance, ROK-Japan and ROK-US-Japan security cooperation amid continued provocations by North Korea.

Prime Minister Kishida said that regarding the marine discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant expected this summer, Japan will receive a review from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and explain in good faith based on scientific evidence with high transparency.

The two leaders decided to dispatch an on-site inspection team composed of Korean experts to the Fukushima nuclear power plant this month.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Seiji Kihara said on the 7th that “a Korean inspection team is scheduled to arrive on the 23rd” regarding the discharge of contaminated water at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, Kyodo News reported.

Prime Minister Kishida said that as Prime Minister of Japan, he would not approve the release of water in a form that adversely affects the health of the Japanese and Korean people or the marine environment.
