But this is not the case, and surely those who submitted to the challenge fell victim to an astonishing optical illusion, since then it turns out that the model’s irises are actually gray.

The trick has been shared on TikTok since illusionist Dean Jackson (@beatonthebeeb)which explains how it works.

The explanation of the optical illusion

“Your brain detects the pigment, the gray area around the pupil, and assumes that the red filter has trapped the blue light,” the magician explains in one clip.

“So it’s trying to help you, like your brain should, by putting the color blue back in the image for you, and your brain is completely fooling you in the process,” the argument continues.

In the back of the human eye there are photoreceptors, cells that respond to incoming light. These come in two types, “rods” or “cones”, and while rods are sensitive to motion and night vision, cones are capable of detecting colour, diffusing 20 minutes.

According to experts, humans have three types of conesand each of them is most sensitive to a particular color, be it red, green or blue.

And they add: A red filter only lets red light through, so any other color should look like gray or black, including green and blue.

The original photo of the woman is in black and white and only when the red filter is placed over her eye color does it appear blue.

However, if our brain recognizes the context of the image and thinks it should appear blue, it can interpret gray light as such, notes Jackson.

Bottom line, when we zoom in and it no longer looks like an eye, the iris appears to be the gray it really is.

What are optical illusions

Optical illusions are often fun, but they also have a vreal value for scientists. Brain puzzles help researchers shed some light on the inner workings of the mind and how it reacts to the environment.

Scientists Kim Ransley and Alex O. Holcombe, from the University of Sydney, highlighted in 2017 the importance of illusions for our understanding the brain

“Visual illusions show us that we don’t have direct access to reality,” the couple wrote The conversation.

“They may also provide insight into the mental processing provided by our experience of the visible world,” they concluded.
