The docuseries Queen Cleopatra (Queen Cleopatra) has crashed on Netflix. The controversy generated before its premiere did not help it when it came to convincing specialized critics and viewers in general, who beat her mercilessly.
Production by Jada Pinkett-Smith, wife of Will Smithtells the story of the Egyptian ruler in four episodes with dramatizations that include the performance of Adele James like Cleopatra.
The fact that James is an actress of mixed heritage had Egyptologists screaming to heaven when they found out she was going to play Cleopatra, and they even sued Netflix for “faking” Egypt’s history.
Most specialists argue that Cleopatra, belonging to a Hellenic dynasty of Macedonian origin, was not black as shown in the docuseries. For them, the Pinkett-Smith decision contributes to “erasing the Egyptian identity”.
they gave it a bad grade
The dubious quality of the content has led to popular sites such as IMDb, Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes Queen Cleopatra becoming one of the worst series in history.
On IMDb, where users can rate on a scale of 1 to 10 how much they like a series or film, the production got a score of “1.0” with a total of 48,000 votes to date (that doesn’t mean it can raise its rating a bit as more people see it).
On Rotten Tomatoes, a site that aggregates both criticism from different media outlets and users, it also reflects failure. The press rates it with an average of 11% and the public with 2%.
On Metacritic, however, the judgment of the specialists was better: the critics rated it on average 45/100. However, users took issue with the series, giving it a meager 0.1.
What do they say on the net?
Queen Cleopatra was also cannon fodder on Twitter, where several users dedicated very unfriendly memes and texts to her.
“I think it has nothing to do with the character being black, Cleopatra was black, anyone who denies that is stupid. But I thought the actress was so ‘weak’ for such a strong character in the story.… something was missing there,” said one person, for example.
“Watching Cleopatra on Netflix amazes me how they can tell these stories”, added another.
“Black Cleopatra he is as real as a 100% European-looking Jesus born in the Middle East,” added a third. “Worst show ever”, condemned another.
