A fifth grade teacher at a school in Hernando County, Florida (USA) complained that the Department of Education he’s investigating her for ‘indoctrination’ after she showed a group of students a Disney movie that features a gay character.
The film in question is A Strange World, one of the studio’s first to feature an openly gay character.
Jenna Barbae He posted a video on TikTok with his disclaimer. In the statement, the teacher confirms that he is under investigation for “indoctrination for showing a Disney film”.
Barbee was a teacher at Hernando’s school for a year until she finally quit. “I want to change things, and I felt like I can’t do it from the inside. It’s too much time and too much stress, and then this happened, and that sealed the deal for me that I made the right decision,” she said .
The teacher explained that he showed his students A Strange World because it was related to his curriculum in earth sciences and ecosystems. She clarified that she didn’t because it’s a film that includes a same-sex couple in its plot.
“All of the teachers and mentors at our school told me that our method for management approval for showing films was to have a signed parental permission form for PG (A and AA rated) films,” she explained Beard.
Later, the woman claimed to have had this permit since the beginning of the year.
What did the School District say?
The school that is investigating the teacher released a statement Monday saying, among other things, that the Disney film will no longer be shown.
“Although not the main plot of the film, parts of the story involve a male character having and expressing feelings for another male character. In the future, this film will not be shown. The school administration and the District Professional Standards Department are currently investigating the matter to see if any further corrective action is required,” the message reads.
Barbee instead denounced that she was denounced because one of the students who attended her class was the daughter of Shannon Rodrigueza woman belonging to the school board.
“A school board member, an elected power official who is supposed to be non-partisan, is authorized to present to the public that she is a Christian and that God has appointed her to the board. Still, it’s indoctrination that I showed a Disney movie,” the teacher said.
And Rodriguez replied: “While Mrs. Barbee is busy turning off the light and playing the victim, the real victims are our children. At what point is there a line between nurturing and teaching?
“Allowing films like this to help teachers open a door for conversations that have no place in our classrooms.”, the student’s mother condemned.
Although Barbee claims it was the woman on the school board who sued her, Rodríguez has not confirmed that she was the complainant.
