But leaders gathered in Hiroshima, including the president Joe Biden and their counterparts from Japan, Canada, Britain, France, Germany and Italy – will be speaking over the next three days on all dimensions of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

They are likely to include discussions on the application of sanctions, the expediency of the provision F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and on the possibility of negotiating an armistice or a peace treaty.

So far Zelensky’s plans have not been made public, and Ukrainian media have hinted at it will join virtually At the climb.

But he has visited Britain and other European countries in the past week, and his willingness to travel outside Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, is in part intended to show that he is confident in the stability of his own government.

There is no evidence that the Russians attempted to interfere with their travels.

If Zelensky makes it to Hiroshima, he will almost certainly hold a face-to-face meeting with Biden.

The leaders of India, Brazil and other nations that have been reluctant to back Ukraine are also attending the meeting as observers, and Zelensky’s presence could make it more difficult for them to hold that position, several officials said.

Zelensky’s long-awaited trip to Japan comes amid mounting pressure for the upcoming success counteroffensive of Ukraine against Russian forces, to turn the tide of a conflict that has turned into a grueling battle with hardly any movement in recent months.

Their petition will be set against the backdrop of a city strongly reminiscent of the catastrophic costs of war.

“We are tasked with maintaining the momentum of international support and communication for Ukraine,” Zelensky said in his late night speech on Thursday.

“I am confident that we will be able to complete this task.”
