The ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff and the US Strategic Command have agreed to expand and deepen cooperation between the major commands of the two countries to further solidify the combined defense posture. A new on-the-ground training (TTX) jointly conducted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the U.S. Strategic Command is also expected to be conducted.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff on the 20th (local time), Park Hu-seong, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Nuclear and WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) Response Headquarters (director), Robert Sofge, head of the ROK-US Combined Forces Command Strategic Planning Department (director), and Strategic Command Commander Anthony Cotton (director) at the US Strategic Office on the 17th (local time) General) met and discussed military countermeasures to strengthen extended deterrence.
The main commands of the two countries include the ROK Joint Chiefs of Staff and the US Strategic Command, as well as the ROK Strategic Command and the ROK-US Combined Forces Command, which are targeted for establishment next year.
Recognizing the importance of preparing defenses against North Korea’s potential attack and nuclear use, Director Park stressed the importance of alliance efforts to strengthen extended deterrence in each sector, including information sharing, consultation procedures, joint planning and implementation.
“Extended deterrence” refers to the concept that the United States provides deterrence capabilities, such as nuclear capabilities, conventional forces, and missile defense capabilities, to a level commensurate with the defense of the US homeland in order to protect allies from nuclear and missile threats from adversaries.
Director Sofji evaluated that the ROK-US alliance has played an essential role in promoting democracy, peace, and economic prosperity while maintaining a solid combined defense posture to protect Korea’s sovereignty and people from any threat or enemy over the past 70 years.
In addition, Commander Cotton underscored the United States’ iron-clad commitment to the alliance and the strong and credible capabilities of the U.S. strategist for extended deterrence.
