A long gun attack against a group of amateur rally drivers in the Mexican town of Ensenada (north, on the border with the United States) set off 10 dead and nine wounded.
The massacre took place on Saturday afternoon when motorists, who were taking part in an adventurous race, were parked along a highway and a group of men got out of a truck and opened fire.
The attack “resulted in 9 injuries and 10 deaths,” the Ensenada government said in a statement.
Videos posted on social media show the bodies of some victims next to SUVs on a dusty sidewalk.
The Baja California state attorney’s office – to which Ensenada belongs and hard hit by drug trafficking violence – announced the formation of a “special investigative team” to identify the killers and determine motives for the massacre, the statement said. .
Some of the injured received emergency care from local Red Cross paramedics, who later transferred them to hospitals in the inner city of Ensenada, a city of about 440,000 residents.
Baja California is one of the states with the highest number of intentional homicides in Mexico, most of them attributed by the government to organized crime gang wars. Between January and April there were 721 homicides, according to official data.
This and five other entities account for 47.3% of the total homicides recorded in the country in the same period (9,912 cases).
Mexico has been embroiled in a spiral of violence that has left nearly 400,000 dead and tens of thousands missing since 2006, when the government launched a controversial anti-drug offensive with US backing and the participation of the Mexican military.
