climb the Mount Everest It’s not something that happens every day, it’s a mountain of 8,848 meters. However, in less than a week, two Nepalese climbers have achieved the record the highest number of climbs to the highest peak in the world.
This Monday was the turn of Pasang Daua Sherpa (46 years), who equaled the world record achieved on May 17 by her compatriot Kami Rita Sherpa crowning the world’s highest peak for the twenty-seventh time. Yes, they uploaded it 27 times: and of course they are a record.
“Pasang Dawa reached the top at 8:25 am local time this Monday, May 22, for the 27th time, equaling Kami Rita’s record,” said government coordinator of Everest Base Camp Khim Lal Gautam.
The competition among Nepalese climbers for who can climb Everest the most times is a serious matter. Dawa Sherpa tied up his mate in early May when he crowned him for the 26th time; but Kami Rita reached the summit for the 27th time on the 17th and regained her record. With the summit reached this Monday, everything was equalized again.
Who is Dawa Sherpa
Born in Pangboche, a village near Everest Base Camp, Dawa Sherpa first climbed Everest 25 years ago in 1998. He has always been dedicated to being Mountain guide.
Since that first ascent, he hasn’t stopped. After the summit in 1998, he repeated it in 1999. He did the same in 2002, 2003, 2004. With the record on the line, in 2006 he climbed it twice, and again in 2007. He reached the summit in 2008 , in 2009 and 2010 he repeated two ascents in the same season.
The new decade has seen Dawa Sherpa an expert at climbing the tallest mountain on the planet. She promoted it in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 she repeated the double ascent. She then she reached the top in 2016 and 2017.
The final stretch of his personal challenge was intense but in drops: 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023, he had double promotion in each season.
A personal fight for the record
After this Monday’s success, Kami Rita, his 53-year-old compatriot and competitor, announced that he will attempt to climb Everest for the third time this season. “I want to end the season with the record on my side,” warned local media.
The expert Sherpa first reached the summit of Everest on May 13, 1994. And since then he has once climbed K2 (8,611 meters altitude) and Lhotse (8,516 meters); Manaslu (8,163 metres) on three occasions; and Mount Cho Oyu (8,201 meters), eight times.
