A man who tried help a family of ducks cross the road near Sacramento, United States, he was shot and killed on Thursday by a teenager in a quiet town on the west coast of United States of America.
rocklin is a quiet community located 35 kilometers north of the city of Sacramentstate capital of California. Its official website talks about a “healthy and growing population” and emphasizes its proximity to Lake Tahoe and the Bay Area.
A little after 8:00 PM last Thursday, near the corner of Park Drive and Stanford Ranch Road, Casey Rivera, 41, was traveling by car with his 11 and 6-year-old children. After noticing a family of ducks in the middle of the road trying to get on her way, she parked and walked over to help.
The man tried to lead them as those present applauded him for his gesture, according to William, a 12-year-old boy, who witnessed the crash, told local media KCRA 3. “He got out of the car and walked scared the ducks went away and everyone cheered because I was very nice,” he said.
She added, “He helped them up to the curb because all the ducklings were having problems and then he walked past our car.”
But the emotion for the gesture and for the safety of the animals soon turned into shock, given that without Rivara even being able to react, he was run over to death by a car driven by a 17-year-old teenager.
“I didn’t see the car that hit him. He just came out of nowhere. All I remember is the sound and then him flying across the intersection. His shoes and one of his socks were left in front of our car. He was the only good man who appeared on the spot to help the ducklings. It’s not fair what happened to him”the boy complained.
The NBC network, for its part, reproduced a statement from the local police according to which the young woman did not flee, but remained at the scene and “is unlikely to face criminal charges”, reads the text signed by Rocklin. Police Captain Scott Horrillo.
“We still have a lot of areas and evidence to look into, but at first glance it doesn’t look like there’s going to be criminal malpractice,” Horrillo told NBC News.
On Sunday, the Rivara family released a statement expressing their appreciation for the messages of support received.
“We have been deeply touched by the overwhelming love and support we have received for Casey Rivara and our family these past few days.”
She adds, “We want to express our sincere gratitude to all of you for the kind messages and gestures of kindness. It’s really disappointing to hear how Casey has positively impacted your lives, and we are extremely grateful.”
The victim’s aunt, Tracey Rivara, set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for Casey’s wife and children and has already raised more than $63,000.
