When German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbok visited China in April, many human rights lawyers, including Wiesong, were arrested or taken away by the authorities.

The Chinese government has taken such steps to prevent appeals of Chinese human rights issues to high-ranking European officials.

At the time, the German embassy in China and the EU mission demanded the immediate release of the arrested lawyers.

Lawyer Wiesung’s older brother revealed on the 21st that the authorities had shown an arrest warrant for the younger brother and his wife on charges of disturbing public order.

Under China’s criminal law, those found guilty of disturbing public order face up to five years in prison.

In an article posted on Twitter on April 7, Taiwan Press Freedom Day, Witness said, “I envy Taiwanese people’s freedom of speech. I hope that the continental people will also enjoy freedom of speech as soon as possible,” he said, worrying that “I think I will go to jail again.”

On April 10, Wiwon said on Twitter, “I strongly condemn the authorities’ sentence of 14 years in prison for human rights activist Xu Zhiyong and 12 years in prison for human rights lawyer Ding Jiaxi.” I pay homage to the two people who have worked hard for this, and I believe that a beautiful China will definitely come true in the future.”

Previously, Wiwon supported the Hong Kong pro-democracy protests in 2014, but was detained and tortured for 99 days.

In January 2018, Yuan, who, along with fellow prominent human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang, defended followers of Falun Gong and others, was arrested on charges of “inciting subversion of state power” and “obstruction of public affairs.”

He was arrested because of an open letter criticizing President Xi Jinping’s “totalitarian” rule.

The member, who was sentenced to four years in prison, was released after the sentence expired in March last year.
