Russia has begun moving tactical nuclear weapons into the territory of its ally Belarus

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko announced the start of transfer of Russian tactical nuclear weapons a territory of the former Soviet republic, which borders on Ukraine.

“We had to prepare the place for storage and so on. We made it. Therefore, the transfer of nuclear charges has already begun,” Lukashenko told Russian television.

Lukashenko assured that the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, informed him during the Eurasian Economic Union events in the Kremlin that had already communicated the decree on the placement of nuclear weapons in Belarus.

“We are talking about a specific document. It was decided to develop what was said orally,” he said.

The amount

He declined to specify the number of nuclear warheads. that his country will host, although he assured that he had agreed all the details with Putin.

“I will not reveal the number and its location. We agreed on the deployment of nuclear weapons: where, when, warheads. A decision had to be made and this corresponds to the Russian president. With Russia, any issue that we present today is decided in within a few days,” he explained.

He also guaranteed the safety of said weapons, underlining this Belarusians are “careful people”.

“That’s why, don’t worry about nuclear weapons. We are responsible for them. This is serious. Everything will be fine,” he said.

When asked by the reporter if such weapons had already reached Belarusian territory, the president replied: “It is possible. I will arrive and check.”

Management

The defense ministers of Russia, Sergei Shoigu, and of Belarus, Viktor Khrenin, signed documents in Minsk which regulate the storage of these weapons Russian tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory.

“The deployment of non-strategic nuclear weapons is an effective response to aggressive politics of countries hostile to us,” the minister said.

Shoigu stressed that while Russia deploys non-strategic nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus, Moscow will maintain control over them and the decision on whether to use them.

“Russia does not transfer nuclear weapons to the Republic of Belarus: control over them and the the decision to use them rests with the Russian side“, he stressed.

Last March, the head of the Kremlin announced an agreement with his Belarusian counterpart for the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in the neighboring country.

Already in April, the Belarusian army received training in Russia on the use of special tactical ammunition for Iskander-M missiles.

In the middle of the same month, Russia also announced that training of Belarusian forces to use Su-25 attack aircraft, equipped to carry tactical nuclear weapons, had been completed.
