“Due to a feverish state, the pope Francis did not receive an audience this morning“, declared the spokesman of the Holy See, Matteo Bruni, without specifying what was the program scheduled for the morning by the Argentine pontiff.

The announcement comes two months after the pope was hospitalized for three days in Rome at the end of March due to pneumonia which he overcame thanks to a treatment based on antibiotics.

The 86-year-old Pontiff had no group meetings planned, but he did not receive anyone even individually because he was not well.

The Vatican press office confirmed Francis’ feverish state without providing further details.

Francis had already had some health problems this year, so much so that he was hospitalized in a Rome hospital between March 29 and April 1 with severe pneumonia.

Pope Francis confided in an interview with Spanish-language television Telemundo on Thursday that the pneumonia was “cured in time” and that if they had waited a few more hours, the situation could have been “more serious”.

As for the pain in his knee, which forces him to move around in a wheelchair or with the help of a cane, he said he felt “much better”.

When asked about his health problems at the end of April, after returning from a trip to Hungary, the pontiff expressed his willingness to continue the journey.

In this plan, from August 2 to 6, he plans to participate in the World Youth Days (WYD) in Lisbon, and then travel to Marseille, France, in September, and later to Mongolia.

At the age of 21, the Argentine pope suffered from acute pleurisy, which the surgeons managed to contain in time by partial ablation of the right lung.

The precarious health conditions of Jorge Bergoglio, elected head of the Catholic Church in 2013, regularly fuels speculation about a possible resignation.

A busy schedule and the possibility of resignation

Despite his advanced age, Francisco maintains a tight schedule of meetings and receives up to an average of ten people a day.

The mornings are usually reserved for audiences in the Vatican with representatives of associations, religious groups and heads of state. The afternoons are dedicated to work and private meetings.

On Thursday he received representatives of the nuns, of the Italian Bishops’ Conference and a group of young people from the Scholas Occurrentes educational network, with whom he spoke on various current issues.

Francis has repeatedly evoked the possibility of resigning from office, as did his predecessor Benedict XVI in 2013, who died in December 2022. The pontiff maintains that this is not a taboo subject, even if he clarified that for now he excludes giving that has passed.

In July 2021, Francisco was hospitalized for ten days for a colon operation, which he said left him with “consequences”. For this reason he rules out undergoing new knee surgery, as the doctors advise.

During an interview in January, she revealed that she suffers from diverticulitis, an inflammation of the diverticula, hernias or bags that form in the walls of the digestive system.

The Pope is constantly monitored by a team of nurses, both in the Vatican and during his travels. Something forced due to his clinical history, which began at the age of 21 when due to acute pleurisy he underwent a partial ablation of the right lung.
