According to CNN and TASS news agency, Kadyrov said through Telegram that day, “The Chechen unit has received a new order to redeploy troops,” and “the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) has become the area of responsibility.”

“According to the order, the Chechen fighters will begin active combat operations to liberate a number of settlements,” he said.

“Other units of the Ahmat Battalion, located in the alternate sector of the ferry line between Zaporizhia and Kherson (southern Ukraine), have received similar orders to launch an attack,” Kadyrov added.

“Tactical training activities such as distribution of duties between commanders and warriors, topographical knowledge and enemy deployment were also conducted there,” he said.

Kadyrov is a loyal ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. His notorious Ahmat unit also helped capture Mariupol in southern Ukraine early in the war.

The Akhmut unit seems to have been tasked with taking complete control of the Donetsk region, including Bahmut, after the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary company.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner Group, who had a conflict with the Russian military leadership over supply issues, insisted on the complete occupation of Bahmut on the 25th, handing over the mission to the Russian regular army and saying that they would withdraw by June 1. Ukraine does not recognize the capture of Bakhmut.
