The buyer saw the two envelopes and was surprised at the contents.
A man found € 150,000 (£ 126,000) in a used wardrobe he bought on eBay.
Industrious Thomas Heller, 50, bought kitchen shelves from an elderly couple in Halle, Germany, then the owner moves into a nursing home.
But a few days after the purchase, on April 14, Heller found two cash boxes hidden inside oak veneer cabinets.
Thomas explained that the kitchen set should have cost € 300, which is currently around £ 252, but he was able to negotiate the price down to € 240, or £ 201.
Thomas bought some furniture on eBay and found treasure inside.
But the second-hand kitchen suddenly ‘came to life’ when the man discovered € 150,000, worth nearly £ 126,000, hidden inside. “One of the envelopes was open and a bunch of € 100 bills were staring at me,” he told The Sun.
The loyal shopper took the money to the nearby police station, where they found a second envelope with more money.
“The police opened the second locked cabinet in front of my eyes. There were large bills in envelopes. Two hundred, five hundred euros.”
The man went to the police and returned the money found.
Agents were surprised at Thomas ’honesty and launched an investigation to find the original owner of the kitchen.
A file was opened in the court of first instance, which has already decided the money belonged to a 91-year-old woman from Halle who was in a nursing home after the death of her husband.
German police further explained that the cabinets came from a home liquidation and were sold by a service provider on behalf of the former owner.
Spokesperson Astrid Kuchta added: “The two boxes are well hidden in hard to see areas of the cabinet.”
One of the envelopes, with a 200 euro bill.
The seller revealed that he was the grandson of the elderly couple, who told the MDR newspaper I have no idea about money.
Thomas is now entitled to a three per cent search fee of € 4,500, currently £ 3,775, thanks to a Good Samaritan clause.
