Russia launched early Thursday morning at air attack with cruise and ballistic missiles against a children’s hospital and two schools in Kyiv, among other critical facilities in and around the Ukrainian capital, and caused the at least three people diedincluding a 9 year old girl. Authorities also recorded a dozen injured.
“Tonight Russia killed a 9-year-old girl, her 34-year-old mother and another 33-year-old woman”, the Ukrainian police specified. At first it was reported that the minor victim was 11 years old.
Russia has repeatedly attacked Kiev with waves of drones and missiles since the invasion began, but attacks on the capital have increased significantly in the past month (there have been 17 counted), as Ukraine prepares a counter-offensive.
As reported by the General Staff of Ukraine, the Air Force intercepted the 10 shells which he identified as short-range Iskander ballistic missiles.
Ukraine’s anti-aircraft systems have become more effective at intercepting Russian drones and missiles, but in some cases the remains of those weapons cause fires and injuries. It happened this morning, when the residues of the bombs also caused damage to a police station and several public and private buildings in three different districts of the Ukrainian capital.
The mayor of Kyiv, Vitalii Klitschko, explained that the management of the clinic is under investigation for not having opened the shelter to those who were in the building during the attack.
After a woman was killed while watching an airstrike from her balcony earlier this week, authorities in the capital have urged residents to heed sirens and stay in shelters and other safe places.
“They have to be vigilant, as ballistic missiles fly at incredible speeds. You have only a few seconds from when the alarm goes off until the rocket arrives!”, people warned in a message.
Eight injured in a Russian border region
At least on his part eight people were injured in a city in the Russian region of Belgorod, on the border with Ukraine, subjected to continuous artillery fire for several hours, local governor Viacheslav Gladkov said on Thursday.
“Shebekino is under constant fire” from rocket launchers, Gladkov said on the Telegram network. Ukrainian forces shelled “the center and the outskirts” of the city, he added. And he completed: “Eight people were injured. There were no deaths,” he said.
The first toll reported by the governor reported five injuries, including a policeman. “Naturally, the life of civilians and the population is threatened. Especially in Shebekino and the surrounding villages”, Gladkov stressed, adding that evacuations will be organized as soon as “the situation has calmed down”.
“The enemy has not penetrated the territory of the Belgorod region”, but “massive artillery attacks” continue, he closed.
For his part, the governor announced on Wednesday the start of the evacuation of hundreds of children from towns bordering Ukraine, targeted by days of intense bombing, and where the situation is “alarming” according to the Kremlin.
“As of today we are evacuating our children from Shebekino and Graivoron districts,” Gladkov said that day. “A first group of 300 children will be sent today to Voronej”, a city located about 250 kilometers further north-east.
