During a visit by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that Russia’s bombings of Kiev were aimed at “humiliating” the international organization.
“These bombings say a lot about the efforts of Russian leaders to humiliate the UN and everything this organization stands for,” Zelensky said in a video posted on Telegram.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the delegation accompanying him in Kiev were “shaken” by the proximity of the Russian bombings in the Ukrainian capital this Thursday (28), although everyone was “safe”.
“This is a war zone, but it is shocking that this is happening close to where we are,” spokesman Saviano Abreu told AFP, without specifying how far the delegation was from Russian missile launch sites.
Kyiv said on Thursday that Russia has stepped up its attacks on eastern and southern Ukraine, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened a swift retaliation against all Western countries engaged on behalf of Ukraine.
More than two months after an invasion that destroyed cities but failed to capture the capital, Kiev, Russia made an effort to seize the two eastern provinces in a war that the West saw as a decisive turning point in the war.
