On the 10th (local time), CNN reported that at 6:00 PM on the 10th (9:00 AM, Korean time) on the 10th, Eastern Standard Time in Mexico, it landed in the state of Jalisco near Las Penitas, accompanied by strong winds of up to 225 km/h, and then landed in central western Mexico. It was reported citing an announcement from the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) that it was moving from .

After landfall, Lydia’s wind speed weakened to 168 km/h and was downgraded from a Category 4 storm to a Category 2 storm. However, the NHC said that heavy rain of 100 to 200 mm is expected in most areas where the storm passes, and up to 300 mm in some areas, and is likely to cause flash flooding and landslides in mountainous areas.

An NHC official said, “Significant coastal flooding is expected to occur in areas south of where Storm Lydia made landfall,” and added, “You must be careful of tsunami waves near the coast.”

The NHC then said that strong waves caused by Lydia were likely to cause rip currents along the west coast of Mexico and the Baja California peninsula.

Rip currents are narrow surface currents that flow from the coast toward the sea at very high speeds with short periods of several hours. Casualties may occur when people are suddenly swept away by the current flowing toward the sea.

A hurricane warning is currently in effect in Mexico from Manzanillo to San Blas.

Storm Lydia is expected to move into inland central and western Mexico from the night of the 10th to the morning of the 11th. An NHC official said, “As Lydia moves inland, its power is expected to weaken rapidly.”
