Iranian Foreign Ministry: US sanctions violate UN Security Council resolutions
UN Resolution 2231: Iran sanctions will be terminated without conditions on the 18th

The Iranian government confirmed on the 18th (local time) that the sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council in relation to Iran’s missile development have ended, and that on the same day, the United States initiated new sanctions under the pretext of the Iranian government’s development of missiles and drones. strongly opposed it.

According to a statement released by Iran’s IRNA news agency and the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, the Iranian government said, “Today (18th), the UN Security Council granted assets to Iranian individuals and organizations for several years due to Iran’s missile development activities and provision of related services and technology.” “We confirmed that the last remaining sanctions, including freezes and bans on economic activities, have been terminated without conditions,” he said.

At the same time, he stated that if sanctions are attempted in the future for the purpose of imposing any sanctions or restrictions related to Iran’s defense-related activities or cooperation, this will be a violation of UN Resolution 2231, and Iran has the right to pursue policies for its own interests and national defense. .

However, the conflict is escalating as the United States announced that it will begin a new series of sanctions related to Iran’s missile development plans from this very day.

On the 18th, the U.S. government announced a list of Iranian individuals and companies subject to sanctions, saying that they were involved in Iran’s development of ballistic missiles and drones, and that they were subject to sanctions including asset freezes and bans on domestic economic activities.

In addition, on the 17th, the previous day, the European Commission also announced on its website, “Going forward, the European Union plans to take the necessary measures to continue maintaining sanctions against Iran in accordance with the Iran denuclearization policy.”

The argument was that there was sufficient reason to prohibit the immediate lifting of sanctions on the 18th, as the nuclear agreement was destroyed and not restored as it was the sanctions termination date determined according to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iran Nuclear Agreement, which was originally led by Iran.

In response to this, on the 17th, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a rebuttal statement through spokesperson Neser Khanani, saying that the European Union’s decision was unilateral, illegal, and politically unjustifiable.

In 2015, Iran reached a nuclear agreement with Western powers, including the United States and Europe, that included giving up its nuclear development plans. However, in May 2018, former U.S. President Trump unilaterally withdrew from the agreement and reimposed sanctions against Iran, and Iran later ended up violating some of the bans on weapons development among the provisions of the nuclear agreement passed.

Conferences to revive the JCPOA resumed in Vienna, Austria in April 2021, but failed to reach an agreement despite several rounds of talks. The talks themselves have been completely suspended after August 2022.

Therefore, neither the Iranian government, which declared the end of sanctions against Iran specified in the nuclear agreement, nor the West’s argument that lifting sanctions is impossible due to the breakdown of the nuclear agreement are both wrong in terms of formal logic.
