A mid-level official at the U.S. State Department publicly resigned after opposing a plan to provide U.S. arms support to Israel.

According to the Washington Post (WP), Josh Paul, director of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Political and Military Affairs, who was in charge of foreign military support projects at the U.S. State Department, described the Biden administration’s response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as ‘impulsive’ on the 19th (local time). He resigned. He is known to have been in charge of military support programs at the U.S. State Department for 11 years.

“I fear Israel’s response to the horrific scale of what Hamas has done,” Paul wrote in his resignation letter. “I recognize the Israeli government’s right to respond and defend itself, but I wonder how many more Palestinian children will have to die in the process,” he wrote.

He continued, “The Biden administration and the U.S. Congress’s response is based on confirmation bias, political convenience, and bureaucratic inertia. This impulsive response is very disappointing but not surprising. “Blindly supporting one side is destructive to the interests of the people of both sides in the long run.”

“America’s resolution against Israel will allow Israel to achieve its desired goals for Gaza without regard for the number of civilian casualties,” Paul said. “I fear that we are repeating the mistakes we have made over the past several decades. “I refuse to be a part of it anymore,” he added.

WP pointed out that Director Paul’s resignation “provides a rare glimpse into internal dissatisfaction with the Biden administration’s military support and foreign policy toward Israel.”

Director Paul’s resignation came as President Joe Biden personally visited Israel to prevent an escalation of war following Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on the 7th. Prior to President Biden’s visit, Secretary of State Tony Blinken also made an unusual visit to Israel twice, emphasizing his firm support for Israel. The U.S. State Department declined to comment on Director Paul’s resignation.
