Pro-Trump Jordan rejected in third vote
Failed to obtain a majority in the party’s vote of confidence
New candidate elected on the 24th… 10 people competition
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (pictured), who was nominated as a candidate for Speaker of the House by the opposition Republican Party, the majority party in the U.S. House of Representatives, withdrew from his candidacy amid opposition within the party. Chairman Jordan received fewer votes in the third round of the plenary session to elect the Speaker of the House than in the first and second rounds, and resigned after failing to reach a majority in the party’s vote of confidence.
Chairman Jordan, who was a founding member of the ‘Freedom Caucus’, a group of hard-line Republican lawmakers and backed former President Donald Trump’s support, received 194 votes in the third round of voting at the plenary session on the 20th (local time). To be elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives, a majority of current members (more than 217 out of 433 seats) must be secured, but the number of votes has decreased further compared to 200 votes in the first round and 199 votes in the second round. The mainstream Republican Party’s opposition to extreme right-wing tendencies, such as agreeing with former President Trump’s claim that the 2020 presidential election results were fraudulent, was decisive.
Chairman Jordan later ran into a wall in the secret ballot for re-confirmation as the party’s candidate, with 86 votes in favor to 112 against. He said, “I don’t regret participating in the primary. “We must unite,” he said, announcing his resignation. The Washington Post (WP) pointed out, “The true face of the Republican civil war has been revealed.”
According to CNN, about 10 people, including Tom Emmer, senior vice-president of the Republican Party, and Kevin Hearn, who leads the Republican Study Committee, the largest faction with 176 members, have either submitted their votes or are being considered for the position of the next Speaker of the House. The Republican Party plans to elect a new House Speaker candidate on the 24th.
On the 20th, President Joe Biden requested $105 billion (approximately 142 trillion won) from Congress for a ‘security budget’ to be used for military aid to Ukraine and Israel, humanitarian aid to Palestine, and border strengthening to control illegal immigration, but it was processed due to a vacuum in the House of Representatives. It appears that it will take some time.
