Danny Serafini shot in California in 2021
Caught after two years of investigation… Sheriff: “Justice will be served”
A player who played as a pitcher in the American Major League Baseball (MLB) was arrested by the police on charges of murdering his father-in-law.
CBS News in the U.S. reported on the 21st (local time) that former baseball player Danny Serafini (49) was identified as a suspect in a murder case that occurred in California in 2021.
Samantha Scott, 33, a woman who worked as a nanny for the Serafini family, was also arrested by police in Las Vegas, Nevada, on charges of conspiracy to commit murder.
Serafini is accused of shooting and killing his father-in-law, Robert Gary Spohr, 70, at a home in North Lake Tahoe on June 5, 2021.
His mother-in-law, Wendy Wood (68), who was also shot, was taken to the hospital, received treatment, recovered, and died a year later.
The police who responded to the report at the time saw a closed-circuit (CCTV) video showing a man wearing a hoodie with his face covered entering the victim’s house. However, the identity of the suspect could not be determined.
Afterwards, investigators conducted a two-year investigation based on CCTV footage and identified Serafini and Scott as suspects.
Spohr’s daughter, Adrienne, said in an interview with CBS, “My parents became targets of crime,” and “I don’t know why they killed my father.”
Serafini was drafted by the Minnesota Twins with the 26th pick in the first round of the 1992 draft. In 2013, he also competed with the Italian national team in the World Baseball Classic (WBC).
He retired after playing in the Mexican league after receiving a 50-game suspension for using banned substances in 2007.
Placer County Sheriff Wayne Wu said, “The fact that the perpetrator of the murder that occurred two years ago was caught is the result of detectives not giving up and continuing to track the criminal,” adding, “Justice has been served.”
The police are investigating the details of the incident and the motive for the crime.
