Japan’s Kishida Cabinet replaces ambassadors from the U.S., China, and Russia

According to local media, former Director Yamada is evaluated as a person preparing for next year’s U.S. presidential election by accumulating extensive diplomatic experience with the U.S. while serving as a U.S. envoy and director of the General Foreign Policy Bureau.

Ambassador Kanesgi served as the Director of the Asia and Oceania Bureau in charge of China and other issues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as the Foreign Affairs Director in charge of the economy. It is the first time in seven years that a person who did not graduate from the so-called ‘China School’ who underwent training in China was appointed as ambassador to China.

He is expected to deal with various issues in the future, including China’s suspension of imports of Japanese seafood and the arrest of Japanese citizens. As a result, current Ambassador Hideo Tarumi, who served for three years starting in 2020, will be replaced.

Former Director Muto served as the Russian Department Manager in the European Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Consul General in Boston.

Local media reported that in the future, he will be responsible for coordinating diplomatic roles with Japan between issues related to the invasion of Ukraine and Russia, which is strengthening relations with China.
