It was revealed that Robert Card (40), the suspect in the shooting that killed 18 people and injured 13 in Lewiston, Maine, was admitted to a psychiatric hospital while serving in the reserve forces. Maine state investigative authorities obtained an arrest warrant and searched Card’s last address with 80 Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents, but were unable to secure a new identity until this day.
On the 26th (local time), CNN reported that in July of this year, Card said “I want to harm my fellow soldiers” at the unit and was taken to the hospital for a checkup. According to the New York Times (NYT), Card, who joined the Army Reserve Corps in 2002 and is currently a sergeant, was in charge of oil supply, transporting and storing automobile and aircraft fuel. He trained part-time, working once a month. His unit mates gave positive reviews. “He was one of the best marksmen in the unit,” said Clifford Steves, who served with Card. “He never had a problem with anyone.”
When Card fired his weapon at a bowling alley on the 25th, people reportedly had no idea what was happening. Chad Vincent (45), who reported the incident to the police, told the NYT, “Five seconds later (after the gunshot), when I heard the second gunshot, someone shouted, “That’s a gun,” and people ran away in panic.” Brian MacFarlane (41), who was attending a hearing-impaired group at the time, did not hear the gunshot and eventually died. Joseph Walker (57) died from a gunshot wound while trying to subdue Card.
The firearm used by Card is the Colt AR15 semi-automatic rifle, which is most often used in shooting incidents in the United States. The White House said on the 26th that U.S. President Joe Biden urged the House of Representatives to pass a bill banning the sale of assault weapons and magazines, saying, “It is the authority of Congress to pass legislation that makes communities and schools safer.”
