A middle school gymnasium collapsed in Heilongjiang Province, China, resulting in casualties. In this area, another middle school gym collapsed last July.
On the 7th, Xinhua, China’s state-run news agency, reported that a middle school gymnasium in Huanan County, Jiamutsi City, Heilongjiang Province collapsed around 7 p.m. the previous day.
Seven people playing basketball at the gym were buried in this accident. Three of them escaped on their own and saved their lives, but three died and one was injured and taken to the hospital.
A merchant near the gym said in an interview with the media, “I thought there was an explosion because I heard a ‘pop’,” and added, “The entire roof collapsed and the exterior walls were damaged in various places.”
Currently, images are being shared on the social media platforms Weibo and
The gym where the accident occurred was a two-story building (total floor area of 2,000 m2), and local authorities estimated that the collapsed area was 500 m2.
Local authorities arrested those responsible for operating the gym and are investigating the cause of the accident.
Some believe that the collapse of the gym was a disaster caused by heavy snow. The day before the accident occurred, heavy snow fell throughout Heilongjiang, and in Jiamutsi, the accumulated snowfall reached 15 mm, so a red warning for heavy snow was issued at 5:30 pm that day.
Local media reported, “A lot of snow was piled up on the roof of the collapsed gym,” and “It has not yet been confirmed whether the collapse was related to the heavy snow.”
This is the second collapse of a gym in China’s Heilongjiang Province this year. On July 23, the gymnasium at No. 34 Middle School in Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province collapsed, burying 15 members of the school’s female volleyball team while they were training. Four of them escaped on their own, but 11 died.
