President Biden held a press conference after meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco on this day and said, “We will return to direct, open and clear (military) dialogue.”

A senior U.S. official previously announced that President Biden and President Xi had agreed to resume high-level military dialogue, which had been suspended since former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August last year, through a meeting on this day.

President Biden emphasized, “Misjudgment of the other party can lead to real problems with major countries such as China.” The suspension of military dialogue so far has been a cause for concern, and this trend could lead to accidents in the future.

The importance of responsible relationship management was also clarified. President Biden emphasized, “The relationship with China is fundamentally competitive,” and “It is my responsibility to make it reasonable and manageable and avoid the outcome of a conflict.”

In this context, President Biden said, “Over the next few months, we will maintain and continue high-level dialogue with China,” and explained that they agreed to continue communication, including making a direct call with President Xi, in the relationship between the two countries.

Meanwhile, at the meeting, the two leaders also reached an agreement on fentanyl, which has become a serious problem in American society. According to U.S. officials, Xi agreed to track down companies that produce fentanyl precursor chemicals.

“This will save lives,” President Biden said, adding, “I appreciate President Xi’s commitment on this issue.” He also said he would pursue cooperation with law enforcement authorities regarding the fentanyl issue.

It is known that an agreement has also been reached in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) regarding cutting-edge technology. President Biden said that experts from both countries decided to discuss safety and risks together in the field of AI.

Regarding the Taiwan issue, which has been the cause of a major strain in relations with China since last year, he said that the US foreign policy of ‘One China’ will not change. He also reiterated the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

President Biden evaluated the meeting on this day as “the most constructive and productive discussion we have ever had.” He also praised himself, saying that since the time when President Xi was Vice President and he was Vice President, the conversations between them have always been sincere.
