China completely suspended military communication immediately after then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August last year. The United States has requested China to restore military dialogue, concerned about contingencies that could occur in Taiwan and the South China Sea.

The two countries also reached an agreement regarding the narcotic painkiller ‘fentanyl’, which has recently emerged as a serious social problem in the United States. China has decided to directly crack down on certain chemical companies that make raw materials for fentanyl.

During the meeting, the two leaders also discussed the Taiwan issue, which is the biggest issue of conflict between the two countries.

President Xi made it clear that the Taiwan issue is “the most important and sensitive issue” in U.S.-China relations. According to China’s official Xinhua News Agency, President Xi urged the United States to stop arming Taiwan and support China’s “peaceful unification.” He said, “China will eventually achieve unification and will inevitably achieve unification.”

In this regard, a senior U.S. official said that President Xi favors peaceful unification with Taiwan, but explained the conditions under which force could be used. The official also said that President Xi said that China has no plans to take military action against Taiwan for several years.

President Biden repeatedly emphasized that the United States’ position is to maintain regional peace and stability, and asked China to respect Taiwan’s election process.

President Xi expressed his discomfort with the US export control measures against China. According to Xinhua News Agency, President Xi emphasized, “I hope that the United States will take China’s concerns seriously and lift unilateral sanctions to provide a fair, fair and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese companies.”

In this regard, President Biden said, “We will not provide China with technology that can be used militarily,” and reaffirmed his position that he will continue to take necessary measures for national security, officials said.
