尹-Kishida, 7th meeting this year
Kishida “I-Palestinian rescue cooperation is solid”… Accelerating the will for cooperation between the two countries
President Yoon Seok-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held a summit meeting on the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in San Francisco, USA, on the 16th (local time). This is the seventh meeting between the leaders of Korea and Japan this year since Korea-Japan relations were normalized and shuttle diplomacy between the two countries was restored in March of this year. On this day, the leaders of Korea and Japan repeatedly expressed their friendship and trust and reaffirmed their will to cooperate.
The two leaders met at a hotel in downtown San Francisco on the 16th and were cordial from the moment they met. Prime Minister Kishida, who arrived at the conference venue somewhat late due to local traffic conditions, said, “I’m sorry. He said, “I’m late,” and President Yoon said, “The child is okay.” Prime Minister Kishida also said, “I walked because I was afraid I would be late (due to local traffic conditions).”
In his remarks, President Yoon said, “It is nice to see Prime Minister Kishida again two months after the G20 (20 major countries) summit,” adding, “We have already had seven summits with the Prime Minister this year to solidify trust between our two countries.” “I am pleased that Korea-Japan relations are continuing in a very positive manner,” he said.
He continued, “This year, exchanges have been activated at all levels, including the heads of state, and the intergovernmental consultative body has been restored, so cooperation between the two countries is deepening.” “All intergovernmental consultative bodies agreed upon during the visit to Japan have now been 100% restored,” he said. He also said, “We will continue to work with Prime Minister Kishida to ensure close communication between the two countries in various fields, including by holding a high-level economic council.”
Prime Minister Kishida also said on this day, “As President Yoon said, today is the 7th meeting this year, just two months after the last meeting in India.” He added, “Meanwhile, the world situation, including the situation in the Middle East, is moving rapidly. “It is very reassuring that close cooperation has been achieved between Japan and Korea regarding the departure of their citizens from Israel,” he said. This is a reference to the process in which Korea cooperated by moving Japanese people along with them when rescuing local Koreans during the Israeli-Palestinian armed conflict.
Prime Minister Kishida continued, saying, “We have been promoting cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including politics, security, economy, and culture, together with President Yoon,” and added, “I hope to take this step further.” He responded by saying, “With the world at a historic turning point, we have a strong intention to lead the world through cooperation rather than division and conflict. In this regard as well, I think Japan and Korea can cooperate as partners.”
On the Japanese side, Chief Cabinet Secretary Murai, Director of the National Security Agency Akiba, Secretary to the Prime Minister Shimada, Secretary to the Prime Minister Otsuru, Foreign Affairs Director Funakoshi, and Director of the Asia and Oceania Bureau Namaz attended the meeting on this day. On our side, Minister of Foreign Affairs Park Jin, Director of the National Security Office Cho Tae-yong, First Deputy Director of the National Security Office Kim Tae-hyo, Senior Secretary for Public Relations Kim Eun-hye, Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs Choi Sang-mok, Secretary for Foreign Affairs Lee Chung-myeon, and Director of the Asia-Pacific Department Seo Min-jung attended.
