“A symbol of the victims of Palestine”
Domestic civic groups held a protest by installing 2,000 pairs of shoes in downtown Seoul, calling for a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine.
The ‘Emergency Action of Korean Civil Society in Solidarity with Palestine’, in which 105 civic groups participated, held a ‘Shoes Demonstration in Mourning for All Victims’ in front of Bosingak Square in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 17th.
2,000 pairs of shoes of different sizes and shapes, including children’s sneakers, women’s boots, shoes, and boots, were placed in five rows on a plaza covered with grid-shaped flagstones.
Emergency Action explained that these shoes were sent by citizens in solidarity with Palestine from all over the country over the course of a week from the 2nd to the 8th.
The emergency action said, “We are now standing in front of shoes that symbolize the countless victims who have died in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Israel during the more than 75 years of Israel’s history of occupation and violence,” and “With these shoes, we can commemorate those deaths.” “It will show that it is not just a number,” he added.
He continued, “Now, we cannot even confirm how many people are currently at the crossroads of survival due to Israel’s violence. “Children, women, and the elderly account for more than half of them,” he said, appealing, “Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip must stop immediately.”
Jin Jin, policy director of the Humanitarian Doctors Association, said, “Palestinian doctors I met at an online meeting a few days ago said that too many patients and medical staff were dying and appealed to all efforts to stop Israel’s attack immediately.” He added, “Medical workers in Korea “I plan to respond to this appeal to the end,” he said.
Participants also chanted slogans such as “Israel must immediately respond to the ceasefire” and “Freedom for Palestine.” The shoes installed at Bosingak Square will be on display until 8 p.m.
