The deceased, who was born in 1927 in Plains, Georgia, the same city as former President Carter, married former President Carter in 1946. The couple celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary this year, surpassing former President George H. W. Bush and First Lady Barbara Bush to become the longest-serving presidential couple in the United States.

It is said that the deceased exercised influence behind the scenes to the extent that she was called a ‘co-president’ when she was first lady from 1977 to 1981. He attended cabinet meetings, major briefings, etc., frequently appeared at events in place of his husband, and even traveled abroad alone to respond to major overseas issues.

The deceased, who had been interested in mental health and senior citizen issues since she was first lady, served as honorary chairman of the President’s Mental Health Committee from 1977 to 1978. After former President Carter finished his term, he founded the Carter Foundation in 1982 and devoted himself to issues such as mental health, care, strengthening infant immunity, human rights, and conflict resolution.
