The United Nations General Assembly adopted a ceasefire plan during the 2024 Paris Olympics on the 21st (local time) and urged Russia, which is continuing the war with Ukraine, to comply with the ceasefire.

This resolution will be effective from July 19, seven days before the opening of the Paris Olympics next year, to September 15, seven days after the closing of the Paralympic Games.

The tradition of suspending all wars and battles during the ancient Greek Olympics has continued to this day.

This resolution, promoted by France, the Olympic host country, shows cooperation “to jointly implement the values of the Olympic Truce around the world,” AFP said.

Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said in a speech that day, “I cannot remember a time when the world faced as much conflict, division, and polarization as it does now.” He added, “In such a precarious world, this Olympic truce resolution is more important than ever.” He emphasized the meaning, saying, “It has a .”

“This resolution is an opportunity to send a clear signal to the world,” he said. “Even in times of war and crisis, we can be together.” “We can join hands and work together for a better future,” he emphasized.

Two years ago, Russia voted in favor of the ceasefire resolution for the last Olympics, but violated the resolution by invading Ukraine just four days after the Beijing Winter Olympics closed last year.

As a result, the IOC banned Russian athletes from participating in the Olympics.

Afterwards, the rules were somewhat relaxed to allow participants to compete as neutral individuals as long as the Russian flag is not visible.

It has not yet been confirmed whether Russian athletes will be able to participate in next year’s Paris Olympics.

Russia’s deputy envoy to the United Nations, Maria Zamolotskaya, emphasized that the resolution was unacceptable.

He criticized, “The illegal ban of Russian athletes from participating in the International Olympic Games is an illegal act that is unprecedented in modern history and reaches the peak of hypocrisy and cynicism.”

At the same time, they objected, asking why sanctions were only targeting Russian athletes among the warring parties. He went on to call it a “dangerous trend of political interference in sports.”

Russia and its ally Syria both abstained on this resolution.
