“Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are increasing due to military activities by the U.S. and its allies.”
“The Korean Peninsula issue must be resolved peacefully politically and diplomatically.”
Russia was concerned that Korea’s suspension of the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement could increase tensions in the region.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mariya Zakharova said this at a briefing on the 22nd (local time), saying that South Korea suspended part of the 2018 inter-Korean military agreement in retaliation for North Korea’s planned satellite launch, Tass news agency reported.
Spokesperson Zakharova said, “North Korea carried out a satellite launch as announced on November 21. “As we are seeing, this has triggered troubling reactions from South Korea, Japan, and the United States,” he said. “The South Korean government has decided to partially suspend the 2018 inter-Korean military agreement as a so-called retaliatory measure.”
He went on to say that the September 19 Inter-Korean Military Agreement “plays an important role in maintaining stability in the area of the (South-North) Military Demarcation Line and preventing armed conflict,” adding, “All of this carries the risk of developing into a large-scale conflict. “Such measures by Korea cannot help but be disappointing,” he criticized.
He also pointed out that tensions on the Korean Peninsula are increasing due to the military activities of the United States and its allies.
He criticized, “The rising tensions around the Korean Peninsula are a direct result of the aggressive military activities of the United States and its allies, who are conducting military exercises almost non-stop and pouring weapons into the region.”
Spokesperson Zakharova said that Russia hopes to maintain peace on the Korean Peninsula through political and diplomatic means without foreign intervention.
He emphasized, “Russia supports all issues on the Korean Peninsula being resolved peacefully through purely political and diplomatic means, without external pressure or threats.”
In response to North Korea’s launch of a military reconnaissance satellite on the 21st, South Korea suspended the effect of Article 1, Paragraph 3 of the September 19 Agreement (establishing a no-fly zone near the Military Demarcation Line) on the 22nd.
