The Angelus prayer means ringing the bell three times, and is a prayer offered in Catholicism at designated times in the morning, noon, and evening to commemorate the birth of Jesus into the world as a human being.

The day before, the Pope canceled a scheduled event due to flu-like symptoms. This afternoon, the Pope visited a nearby hospital and underwent a lung examination, and it was confirmed that he was not at risk of complications.

Following the Angelus prayer, Pope Francis also mentioned the event commemorating the Ukrainian Holodomor massacre, in which millions of Ukrainians were massacred from starvation under the Soviet Union in the 1930s. Regarding Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the Pope said, “Far from being healed, the wounds are becoming more painful due to the atrocities of the war,” and “it continues to cause suffering to the people.”

“Prayer is a force of peace that breaks the vortex of hatred, breaks the cycle of revenge, and presents an unexpected path to reconciliation,” the Pope said, urging us to “continue to pray for all peoples divided by conflict.”

The Pope also expressed gratitude to God for the halt in fighting between Israel and Palestine and for the release of hostages and prisoners held by the warring parties.

He appealed to believers to pray for all hostages and prisoners to be released as soon as possible. He called for prayers so that more humanitarian aid can be delivered to Gaza, but also emphasized the need for dialogue.

Lastly, Pope Francis mentioned the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) next week and said, “In addition to war, the world is facing another major risk that threatens life on Earth, especially future generations. “We are under threat from climate change,” he warned. “This goes against God’s plan to create everything for life,” the Pope said.

When Pope Francis arrives in the United Arab Emirates on the 1st of next month, he will become the first Pope to attend the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
