U.S. Republican Party member Mike Turner (Ohio), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, predicted on the 26th (local time) that it would be difficult to provide additional support to Ukraine and Israel within this year, the U.S. political media outlet The Hill reported.

According to reports, Chairman Turner said in an interview with NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ that day that the White House’s position on the southern border is a barrier to passing the Ukraine-Israel aid bill.

“I think it will be very difficult to pass this by the end of the year,” Turner said. “The White House’s southern border policy is becoming an obstacle.”

“The White House has recognized that the southern border is a threat and has invested money, including in a national security package, but policy changes will be needed,” he said. “Congress will require other types of provisions to protect the southern border.” reported.

Earlier this month, the House Republican Party passed a $14.3 billion (approximately 18.64 trillion won) support bill for Israel, but it is unclear whether it will pass the Senate, where the Democratic Party holds the majority. The White House is opposing the House bill because it omits support for Ukraine.

Last month, the White House submitted a budget package worth $106 billion (about 138.171 trillion won) to Congress, including funding and border protection for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said earlier this month that he would not accept the House bill, and the White House said President Biden would veto any bill that only supports Israel.

The House bill includes cutting $14.3 billion from the budget allocated to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and using the funds to pay for military aid to Israel. The Democratic Party’s position is that it cannot accept this bill, saying that if it is approved, the IRS budget needed to enforce the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which is considered President Biden’s major achievement, will be cut.

President Joe Biden is under pressure to reduce the influx of illegal immigrants at the southern border ahead of next year’s presidential election.

In the House Republican Party, a growing number of lawmakers oppose additional aid to Ukraine. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) expressed his desire to link the Ukraine aid budget with the southern border budget.
