Dozens of casualties, including children… House collapsed and car overturned
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee: “I’m praying for all Tennesseans affected.”
A powerful tornado struck the central United States, killing at least six people and sending dozens of people to the hospital with injuries.
According to the Associated Press on the 10th (local time), a tornado that struck central Tennessee on the 9th killed three people, including a child, in Montgomery County, and three people died north of Nashville.
“I am heartbroken to hear this devastating news,” Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said in a statement. “The city stands ready to help them during this time of disaster.”
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, one of the three people killed on the city’s north side was in a mobile home that was struck by a tornado. The other two people were a two-year-old baby and her mother, who were also injured when their mobile home collapsed due to strong winds. The cause of death of the remaining three is not yet known.
It is reported that 23 people are being treated for injuries at Montgomery County Hospital.
Rescue authorities urged residents to stay at home while rescue teams checked the situation on the scene. Mayor Pitts said on social media, “If possible, please stay at home and avoid the roads,” and added, “First responders need time and space.”
The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) issued several warnings before the tornado touched down in Tennessee. NWS plans to investigate the area in Kentucky where the tornado is believed to have originated.
According to ‘Power Outage’, a website that compiles power outages in the United States, more than 80,000 households in Tennessee suffered power outages on the night of the 9th when a tornado occurred.
“My wife and I are praying for all Tennesseans affected by the tornadoes,” Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said in a statement. “We mourn the lives lost and hope everyone continues to follow the guidance of local and state officials.” He said.
