A diamond ring worth more than 1 billion won disappeared from a famous hotel in Paris, France, causing an uproar. The ring ended two days later when it was discovered inside a vacuum cleaner.
According to Le Parisien and BBC on the 11th, a Malaysian female guest at the Ritz Hotel in Paris reported to the police that she lost her diamond ring on the 8th.
The ring is studded with 6.51 carats of diamonds and is worth 750,000 euros (about 1.06 billion won).
The guest, known only as a businessman, claimed that he left the ring on the table and when he returned from shopping, it was gone.
The police who responded to the report began an investigation, considering the possibility that it was a case of ‘theft of valuable goods.’ This is because a similar incident occurred at this hotel in the past.
The hotel said that the ring was found inside a vacuum cleaner dust bag during a search by security guards on the morning of the 10th, two days later. The ring was sucked into the vacuum cleaner during the cleaning process.
The hotel said it was not a theft and was “satisfied that the customer found the ring,” but media outlets such as Le Parisien pointed out that “this is not enough to resolve suspicions.”
A guest who left Paris for London on the 9th after losing the ring plans to return to Paris to look for the ring.
The Ritz Hotel, considered ‘the most luxurious hotel in the world’, has suffered from jewel theft and loss incidents in the past.
In January 2018, five masked armed robbers stole 4 million euros (about 5.7 billion won) worth of jewelry from a hotel display case and fled. In September of the same year, Saudi Arabian royalty reported to the police that they lost jewelry worth 800,000 euros (about 1.1 billion won) while staying in a suite.
