According to the Italian news agency ANSA and The Local Italy on the 12th (local time), Roman archaeological authorities announced that they had found a luxurious house from ancient Rome between the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, not far from the Colosseum.

“This building, estimated to have been built between the late 2nd century and the end of the 1st century BC, is a true treasure,” said Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano in a statement.

This house first became known when archaeologists discovered its walls in 2018. The house was confirmed to have facilities such as an atrium and garden, a cave-style banquet hall, and an artificial waterway.

Authorities noted that the mansion’s most notable feature was its extraordinary mosaics, which “depict a complex series of scenes using various types of seashells, blue tesserae, pieces of glass and pieces of white marble.”

The mosaic depicts three large ships riding the waves toward a coastal city. The mural also depicts a pile of weapons with Celtic trumpets, warships, and tridents. “This probably suggests that the owner of this mansion achieved victories on land and sea 2,000 years ago,” authorities said.

This house consists of several floors, but only some of the rooms have been excavated so far, and excavation work is scheduled to continue until next year.

“We will strive to open this site, which best reminds us of ancient Rome, to the public as soon as possible,” said Alfonsina Russo, director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park.
