According to the British Guardian on the 12th (local time), World Coffee Portal, which analyzes the global coffee market, said in a report released last month that the number of branded coffee shops in China increased 58% over the past year to 49,691. This is more than 9,000 more than the 40,062 coffee shops in the U.S., where the growth rate was only 4%.

The United States has held the top spot in the world’s largest coffee shop market for the past 20 years when this survey was conducted, but China has now taken over this position.

Jeffrey Young, founder and CEO of World Coffee Portal, said, “The East Asian coffee shop market is showing rapid growth thanks to the amazing store expansion in China, which has rapidly emerged as a global coffee industry powerhouse.”

Luckin Coffee and Coty Coffee, local Chinese chains, expanded rapidly last year, adding 5,059 and 6,004 stores, respectively. Luckin Coffee, established just six years ago, boasts the largest scale, operating 13,273 stores in China.

Starbucks, which opened its first store in China in 1999, opened 785 stores in China this year, bringing the total number of stores to 6,806. However, Coty Coffee, founded by two former Luckin Coffee executives in August last year, is quickly catching up with Starbucks by opening 6,061 stores.

The coffee shop with the most stores in East Asia was confirmed to be Starbucks. Starbucks opened 1,223 additional stores over the past year and operates a total of 13,524 stores in 15 countries.

However, the Guardian reported that domestic companies from various countries, such as Korea’s Mega Coffee, Indonesia’s Tomoro Coffee, and Malaysia’s Juice Coffee, are challenging Starbucks’ stronghold and increasing their market share at home and abroad.

World Coffee Portal said, “As the branded coffee shop market across East Asia matures, rapidly expanding companies are increasingly seeking growth opportunities in overseas markets.” “Since opening its first store in China last year, Coty Coffee has expanded into Korea, Indonesia, Japan, and Hong Kong, while Luckin Coffee, Indonesia’s Kopi Kenangan, and Korea’s Compose Coffee have all opened their first overseas stores within the past year.” He explained.
