Demonstration of putting an egg in boiling water while doing a squat
Tesla Chief Researcher: “The video is actually devoid of any computer graphics.”
Tesla, an American electric vehicle manufacturer, released a video of the second generation humanoid (human-shaped robot) ‘Optimus’.
On the 13th (local time), Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted a demonstration video of the Optimus 2nd generation on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
The 2nd generation Optimus has fewer externally exposed parts compared to the 1st generation, which was unveiled at Tesla’s shareholders’ meeting earlier this year. The weight is also about 10 kg lighter.
Tesla explained in a video, “The next-generation Optimus walks 30% faster than before, moves its hands in 11 directions, and is equipped with tactile sensors on all fingers.”
In the video, Optimus was shown walking in front of Tesla’s electric vehicle ‘Cybertruck’ or doing squats at the gym. The American media outlet The Messenger commented, “The walking speed has definitely increased compared to the first generation, but the movements are still very careful and cautious.”
Regarding the sight of Optimus walking, some people said that the video was played quickly. In response, Tesla’s chief researcher Julian Ivarz explained through
The biggest change in the 2nd generation Optimus is the installation of new tactile sensors on the hands and fingertips that enable faster and more complex movements. This sensor allows the robot to determine what it is holding. In the video, Optimus also demonstrated picking up an egg and putting it into boiling water.
It is analyzed that it is premature for Tesla’s Optimus to be used in real life. However, it is clear that Tesla is rapidly improving the functionality and performance of its robots. This is because when Tesla unveiled the first prototype of Optimus last year, the robot seemed difficult even to walk.
Meanwhile, Musk has previously stated that the price of Optimus will not exceed $20,000 (about 26 million won). However, some analyzes suggest that the actual selling price may be lower than this as research and production progress.
