The Ukrainian prosecutor’s office said on Friday that the number of children killed in Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24 had risen to 219.
According to data published by the Ukrinform portal, more than 398 children were injured during the war. However, the office said on Telegram that the numbers are not exact and could change at any time.
Most injured young children are concentrated in Donetsk (139), followed by Kyiv province (115) and Kharkiv (95). Child deaths were also reported in Chernihiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, Sumy and Zhytomyr.
According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), more than 4.8 million Ukrainian children have had to leave their homes because of the war. This represents about two-thirds of the country’s 7.5 million people in this age group, in a calculation that includes those who go to other countries, such as internally displaced persons.
