Even in Europe, where many tourists visit, gun anxiety is growing.

A shooting incident occurred at Karlova University (Charel University) in downtown Prague, the Czech capital, on the 21st (local time), leaving at least 14 people dead and 25 injured. The suspect, David Kozak (24, photo), also committed suicide at the scene. He is a student at this school, which was founded in 1348 and has a 675-year tradition, and it is shocking to discover that he had planned and meticulously prepared the crime for a long time to commit large-scale murder.

The fact that a shooting rampage causing massive casualties occurred in Europe, where gun incidents were thought to be relatively rare, and the fact that the Czech Republic is a popular travel destination for many Korean tourists also raises concerns. According to the Czech Tourism Agency, 410,000 Korean tourists visited the Czech Republic annually in 2017, before the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) outbreak. The scene of the crime, Karlova University, is also only about 500 meters away from Charles Bridge, a famous attraction in Prague.

According to the British Guardian, the police said at a press conference on the 22nd that “14 Koreans were killed in this accident,” and that the suspect also committed suicide. It was revealed that among the injured were three foreigners, including two from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and one from the Netherlands.

On local social media, footage of Kozak precisely aiming at the victim like a sniper from the roof of a building at the time of the crime, and footage of him moving around and shooting, are circulating on local social media. The inside of Karlova University, stained with blood, was also captured. Some students had to cling precariously to the railings outside the high rise of the school building to avoid gunfire.

In the past, Kozak wrote in his diary and on social media, “I wanted to commit suicide after the shooting rampage at school,” and “I always wanted to kill (people).” “I will go crazy one day,” he wrote. He praised another mass shooter, who also attacked Carlo Badae in 2019 and killed nine people, saying, “I realized that mass murder is more efficient than serial murder.”

Police believe that Kozak, who has similar tendencies, was inspired by shooting incidents overseas and is investigating the specific motive. In particular, it was revealed that Kozak had committed three other murders prior to this crime. On the day of the crime, Kozak’s father was found dead in his hometown of Hostoun. Police believe that this was also Kozak’s crime. Circumstances were also captured that Kozak murdered a man and his two-month-old daughter in Prague on the 15th. However, authorities said it was unlikely that his crime was linked to a terrorist group.

It is pointed out that the Czech Republic’s lax gun regulations and the police’s lax initial response also contributed to the loss of life. According to CNN, more than 300,000 people out of a total population of about 10 million have gun permits. Last year, the number of registered firearms reached 1 million. There is no need to submit a criminal record when obtaining a firearms license. Kozak also had a license.

The police received information that Kozak would be giving a lecture in a building at Karlova University that day and evacuated the people in that building. However, the shooting occurred in another building and led to a tragedy. President Petr Pavel declared the 23rd a ‘National Day of Mourning’.
