Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian praised the country’s relationship with Russia as Western powers pressured Beijing to condemn the war in Ukraine.

“An important takeaway from the success of Sino-Russian relations is that both sides are going beyond the Cold War-era model of political and military alliances and are committed to developing a new model of international relations based on conflict-free and non-conflict attack other countries,” Lijian said at a press conference.

“This is fundamentally different from the Cold War mentality behind some countries’ efforts towards cliques and zero-sum games. [em teoria econômica, situação em que um lado deve perder para outro poder ganhar]”, continued.

China and the US have conflicting positions on the war in Ukraine due to the close partnership between Beijing and Moscow. The first avoids even using the term war, as Russia wants, calling the invasion a “special military operation”.

The Chinese are trying to take a neutral stance, saying that “the territorial integrity of every sovereign nation” must be respected, but saying that Russia’s security concerns are “legitimate”.

On the other hand, the Americans impose political, financial and economic sanctions against the Russians and help the Ukrainians to defend themselves through war. In addition, the White House has formally voiced fears that Beijing will help Russia with arms supplies – something the Chinese reject – and urged President Xi Jinping to use his influence to end the war with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

US President Joe Biden said in a phone call last month that if China supports Russia, there will be consequences. According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Xi said that “military conflicts do not concern anyone” and that “the Ukraine crisis is not something we want to see happen.”
