Call for peace between Israel and Hamas
The Korean Peninsula is also affected by the world’s numerous misfortunes… Grief and prayer for positive transformation
Roman Catholic Pope Francis fiercely criticized the arms industry on Christmas Day, the 25th, while appealing for world peace, including between Israel and Palestine.
In the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Francis said he was mourning the “heinous attack” committed by Hamas in southern Israel on October 7 and called for the release of the hostages.
He also said humanitarian aid must be delivered to refugees and the Israeli military must end its war in Gaza and its “harvest of innocent civilian lives.”
Pope Francis filled his Christmas blessing with a request for world peace. He said Bethlehem’s story of the nature of Jesus’ birth conveys a message of peace, before adding that Bethlehem had become “a place of sorrow and silence” this year.
The Pope’s annual Christmas Urbi et Orbi (Rome City and the World) address is usually filled with laments about the various misfortunes facing the world. This year again, from Armenia and Azerbaijan to Syria and Yemen, Ukraine and South Sudan, Congo and the Korean Peninsula, the Pope appealed for humanitarian action, dialogue and security to prevail over violence and death.
He called for peace between Israel and Hamas, urging that the armed conflict be resolved “through serious and patient dialogue.” He emphasized that dialogue between the parties must be supported by the support of the international community and strong political will.
He called for goodwill from governments and people in the Americas, hoping they would deal with the “worrying flood” of thousands of people attempting to emigrate.
In his speech, Francis took particular aim at the arms industry, accusing it of adding fuel to conflict on the planet through people’s indifference.
“The arms industry is often mentioned and written about so much that the profits and profits that drive puppet wars should be brought to light in detail,” he said. “How can we talk about peace when weapons production, sales, and trade are on the rise?” pointed out.
Pope Francis has often criticized the arms industry as “merchants of death” and has said that the Ukraine war and other wars are being used as an opportunity to test new weapons and purge old stocks.
