Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was transferred to a prison north of the Arctic Circlebut “he is fine,” his spokesman said Monday, ending a 20-day mystery over his whereabouts that left many of his supporters fearing the worst.
“We found Alessio”spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said on social media. “His lawyer saw him today.”
After an exhaustive and frenetic search into the Russian prison system After his disappearance on December 5, Navalny’s aides in exile said Wednesday they had located him a penal colony in the Yamalo-Nenets region in the Russian Arctic.
Ivan Zhdanov, head of Navalny’s anti-corruption foundation, described the facility as one of Russia’s “most northern and remote” prisons.
The penal colony, known as IK-3in the Arctic settlement of Kharp, is about 1,600 miles northeast of the prison where Navalny has been held for much of the time since his arrest in early 2021.
“Alessio’s situation is a clear example of this how the system treats political prisoners, trying to isolate and repress them,” Zhdanov said on social media.
