Several decades later, the world was divided into 24 time zones, the zero point of which is the Greenwich meridian, which passes near London.

In a bit of history, the Naval Hydrography Service (SHN) reports that in 1920 the government adopted the “four-hour time zone west of the Greenwich meridian” for our country. This was nine years before Scotsman Stanford Fleming’s project, Universal Time, was adopted by most countries.

Fleming was a Scottish engineer living in Canada. There, according to legend, after missing a train he thought of dividing the world into 24 time zones (one every 15 degrees) to establish the time of a country or territory.

Starting from the Greenwich meridian, then, towards the east you have to add the hours while towards the west you have to subtract them. For this reason, since 1969, our country has been three hours ahead of UTC (zone -3).

This was confirmed by Law 26.350, promulgated in 2007, which establishes official Argentine time during the winter as zone -3 and during summer as zone -2. However, since 2009, the winter time has been maintained throughout the year.

From this rule you can check the time differences with different countries. Obviously with London it is three hours, while with Madrid it rises to four during the northern winter and five during the summer.

The Timeis website on its informed website allows you to compare time differences with hundreds of cities, in addition to those mentioned. There you can see that the difference between Buenos Aires and Paris or Johannesburg is four hours; with Tokyo, 12 hours and with Sydney, 14 hours.

But as we were saying, no large city has as much time difference with Buenos Aires and all of Argentina as the wonderful Auckland, the most impressive and most populated city in New Zealand with 1.5 million inhabitants.
